The Department of Foreign Affairs has named the two Irish women who were killed early today when they were hit by a car as they holidayed in Rome.

They have been named as Mary Collins, 28, from Co Kildare and Liz Gubbins, 27, from Co Limerick.

The pair, who were holidaying together, were knocked down on a pedestrian crossing in the centre of the Italian capital at around 2am Irish time.

“We are helping the families, providing them with consular assistance and we would be in contact with the police,” a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

The driver was later arrested.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said there are as yet no details on when the remains will be brought back to Ireland.
