George Best has left hospital in Belfast after spending 10 days having treatment for pneumonia.

He was picked up at the City Hospital by his wife Alex and a number of minders who gave waiting photographers the slip by whisking him away in the back of a vehicle with blacked-out windows.

His manager Phil Hughes said Best was 100% better.

He added: "He's just pleased to be getting home, he is going to stay in Northern Ireland for a couple of weeks convalescing.

"Doctors said it would take some time before he is fully fit but, knowing George, he will be back long before that."

It was expected that Best would spend his recuperation time in the house he and Alex bought last year on the Co Down coast, outside the fishing village of Portavogie.
