A 80-year-old man died after he was struck by a truck, Gardaí have confirmed.

The incident last night brings to four the number of people killed on the country’s roads in just over a day.

It comes as new figures released by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) show a drop in the number of road deaths for the first half of the year to 161.

The latest incident happened at around 4.30pm in Emyvale, Co Monaghan.

The man was rushed to Our Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where he died from his injuries shortly after 9pm last night.

Earlier, a man who was a passenger in a car was killed after an accident on the main N6 between Dublin and Galway at Kinnegad, Co Westmeath. No other vehicle was involved.

The driver of the car was brought to Mullingar General Hospital for treatment.

A 57-year-old woman died on Thursday afternoon following a two-car crash in Co Galway.

The incident happened at Oxgrove Bridge, Killimor, when the car in which she was travelling was in collision with another vehicle.

She was taken to Portiunculla Hospital, but later died.

A 35-year-old man was killed last night when the motorcycle he was riding hit a road sign on the N32 in Coolock.

The accident happened at 8.20pm.

The man was taken to Beaumont Hospital but died later.

Road traffic deaths are down by 38 compared with the same period last year.

This latest death brings to 161 people killed in the country’s roads in the first six months of 2007, compared with 199 last year.

But despite the decrease, the RSA has warned the summer months are the most dangerous on Ireland’s roads.

It highlighted in particular the increased number of farming vehicles and appealed for drivers to take extra care.
