Ahern to be elected to third term

Fianna Fáil leader Bertie Ahern is set to be elected to a historic third consecutive term as Taoiseach today when the new Dail meets for the first time.

Fianna Fáil leader Bertie Ahern is set to be elected to a historic third consecutive term as Taoiseach today when the new Dáil meets for the first time.

Mr Ahern will lead a coalition Government involving both the PDs and the Green Party, with the support of a number of independent TDs.

Last night, the Greens voted by a majority of more than 80% in favour of entering Government with Fianna Fáil, despite their criticism of the party during the election campaign.

Today's proceedings get underway in the Dáil at 3pm, when votes will be taken for the role of Taoiseach and Ceann Comhairle.

The make-up of the cabinet will also be revealed later in the day, with the Greens set to get two ministerial positions and PD leader Mary Harney expected to retain the health portfolio.
