There has been more bad news for the country's hi-tech sector this afternoon.

SMTC in Donegal has announced it is to axe 69 jobs within the next 30 days.

The company is based in the Derrybeg industrial estate in Gweedore.

The firm said, as well as the lay-offs, the company has been forced to put 110 workers on a three-day week.

The company has blamed a down turn in the technology sector.

The Canadian firm, which also has a base in Cork, makes fibre-optic cables for the telecommunications industry.

The Tanaiste, Mary Harney, has described the recent hi-tech job losses as a devastating blow, but she is insisting the future for the industry is still secure.
