An amateur treasure hunter found the body of a German soldier killed in northern France after his metal detector bleeped over the man's steel helmet.

The man dug up the body, which was buried in a field in Normandy near Saint-Lo.

Authorities say the soldier had no identity tag or other way of finding out who he was.

They will make arrangements to bury him in a German cemetery in La Cambe.
