J.J. Killian MD of Flancare Holdings has today been elected as chairman of Irish Small and Medium Enterprise (ISME).

He succeeds Daniel Hickey of AllinAll Ingredients.

A former army officer, Killian set up Flancare in Clonmel in 1993 with only 10 employees. He remains as managing director of that company, located in Clonmel, Longford and Dublin and which today employs more than 300 people.

"As incoming chairman, I am keen for the Association to focus and lobby on areas such as national infrastructure, or more pertinently, the lack of it," said Killian. "As someone involved in nationwide logistics, I am extremely critical of the poor road network and lack of broadband penetration, which is hampering Irish business from reaching its true potential.

"I am also keen to generate much more debate on public sector benchmarking, which is threatening to suck the life out of the public finances and in turn would cause irrevocable damage to the economy.

"I am confident that, with the support of the National Council and the ISME staff, the Association will continue to prosper and be to the forefront in tackling the many issues that are impacting on the SME sector."
