A teenager who murdered a German student in a fatal stabbing in Dublin has been described as the "ringleader" of the attack by a judge who has sentenced him to seven years detention.
His co-accused - 20-year-old Wesley Kelly of St Anthony's Road, Rialto - has been jailed for six-and-a-half years for the manslaughter of Thomas Heinrich on December 1, 2012.
Erasmus students, 22-year-old Thomas Heinrich and his friend Robert Rinker from Germany, were stabbed by local teenagers in Rialto on a night out.
Robert Rinker - now aged 25 - survived the attack but his friend died as a result of his injuries.
One of the accused was just 16 at the time. Now aged 17 he was described as the ringleader by Mr Justice Barry White who sentenced him to seven years detention after a jury convicted him of murder.
His co-accused 20-year-old Wesley Kelly pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a jail term of six-and-a-half years.
The judge told the two men as they stood in the dock that their actions had had "tragic repercussions" and that they had blighted their own lives, as henceforth they will be known as killers.
