A mojor lobbying effort will be made today to convince politicians here that the proposed workplace smoking ban should be implemented in January.

Health professionals have grouped together and have asked politicians to meet them in Dublin's Shelbourne hotel today.

Organised by the Irish Cancer Society, with 18 separate organisations involved, they will brief politicians as to why the ban should be imposed.

Meanwhile, it is expected the Health minister, Micheál Martin, will act soon to sign the ban into place.
