Non-G8 leaders arrive at summit

More world leaders today began arriving at Gleneagles where the G8 summit got under way.

More world leaders today began arriving at Gleneagles where the G8 summit got under way.

The second wave of leaders, from non-G8 countries, began arriving this morning at Prestwick airport.

Brazil’s president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was first to arrive at Prestwick, where he was greeted by Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen, a military band and flag-waving schoolchildren.

He was later greeted at the doors of Gleneagles by First Minister Jack McConnell.

South African president Thabo Mbeki was next to fly in to Prestwick.

Other arrivals scheduled for today included Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh, China’s president Hu Jintao, and Mexico’s president Vicente Fox.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and top officials of the IMF, World Bank International Energy Agency and World Trade Organisation were among other arrivals in the course of the day.
