Goalkeeper Shay Given and defender Phil Babb sat out training with the Ireland squad in Dublin this afternoon, but both are expected to be fit for the Euro 2004 qualifier against Russia on Saturday.

Given has recovered from a slight back injury, but was rested today after playing in Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool last night.

Babb, meanwhile, has a minor knee injury, but should be fine to take his place on the bench for Saturday’s game.

Manager Mick McCarthy today reiterated his plan to name Kenny Cunningham and Gary Breen in the centre of defence for the friendly, the opening game in Ireland’s Euro 2004 campaign.

He also said that Kevin Kilbane is likely to start the match.

McCarthy refused to be drawn on the subject of Roy Keane’s sending off against Sunderland at the weekend, saying it is not a matter that concerns him because it does not reflect on his current squad.
