Dettori, Fallon still neck and neck

Frankie Dettori and Kieren Fallon are level on 155 at the top of the jockeys’ championship after both had a winner apiece at Kempton Park today.

Dettori struck first when taking the opening Norman Hill Memorial EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes on the Godolphin newcomer Fen Shui.

Pushed to the front over a furlong out, the 3-1 favourite romped home by six lengths from Abide with Phoebe Woodstock a length and a quarter away in third.

However, Dettori’s lead did not last long as Fallon drew level by taking the second division of the maiden on Quickfire.

The Khalid Abdullah-owned Dubai Millennium filly went on over a furlong and a half out but the 8-13 shot gave her supporters a scare when drifting across to the stands side.

Despite that manoeuvre, Michael Stoute’s charge won by a length and three-quarters from Dettori on Love Always.

The champion then went within of neck of nosing ahead but Kerashan had to settle for second best behind Australian in the Dennis Hutchings EBF Maiden Stakes. Dettori’s intended mount Zalaal was a late withdrawal.

Neither jockey bothered the judge in the next two races before Dettori was pipped on Elmustanser in a bobbing finish to the Renault Kangoo Van EBF Classified Stakes.

Dettori was unable to shake off Jimmy Fortune on Camrose, who got the verdict by a short head with Fallon was two lengths away in third on Credit.

The Italian was due to ride Explosive Fox in the concluding Dalkia ETS&Landsecurities EBF Classified Stakes, which Fallon was to sit out, but was denied the chance to end the day on top when racing was abandoned.

The closest title race in years moves on to Newmarket tomorrow when Dettori has a full book of six rides and Fallon four.
