Minor shortage of euro takes EU officials by surprise

Officials from the European Union have warned retailers across the EU that there are mounting problems providing change in the new euro currency.

Officials admit that they are surprised by the practice of large amounts of national currencies are being exchanged in shops while smaller sums are being brought to banks to be exchanged.

The high demand for bills and coins in shops has created what is being described as a ‘minor shortage’ of cash reserves because withdrawals from banks have been about four times above the average rate.

However, the European Central Bank remains confident that the shortage will end soon.
