It has been reported today that the Government is considering another price freeze, following increases in the price of the pint and other alcoholic drinks.

A number of key government departments believe that some publicans have exploited the market since the last price order expired on January 14.

In some pubs the price of a pint has reportedly increased by up to 15p, while as much as 70p has been added to the price of mixers.

It is expected the new freeze will be set at a slightly higher level than last May's prices to allow for inflation.

This would mean that many pubs, especially in Dublin, would have to reduce their prices considerably.

The Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Finance Minister are now of the opinion that deregulation of the pub trade is the best way to ensure cheaper prices in the long term.

A decision on the new price order will be taken within weeks.
