Harney vows to fully implement Mental Health Act

Minister for Health Mary Harney has promised to implement all outstanding sections of the 2001 Mental Health Act by November of this year.

Minister for Health Mary Harney has promised to implement all outstanding sections of the 2001 Mental Health Act by November of this year.

The legislation paves the way for the establishment of independent tribunals to review all involuntary admissions to mental health institutions.

The Government had been criticised for failing to implement all aspects of the act when it was introduced five years ago.

The Mental Health Commission has welcomed the announcement.
