For the second week running Argentina’s Daniel Vancsik takes a lead into the final day on the European Tour.
But the 30-year-old big-hitter wants no repeat of last week’s Madrid Open, when he blew his hopes of a second Tour title by running up a quintuple bogey nine on the fifth hole.
After a third round 68, Vancsik is 18 under par and one ahead of England’s Steve Webster and South African Charl Schwartzel in the Portugal Masters at the Victoria Club in Vilamoura.
Until his victory in the Madeira Islands Open in March, Vancsik had never finished higher than 16th in any event on the circuit – but now he has a chance to take his earnings for the season to over €718,000.
Two clear at halfway, he fell off the pace with an outward 36, but then birdied the 10th, 12th, 15th and 17th – and missed a chance to double his advantage on the last.
Schwartzel, also chasing his second win of the year after capturing the Spanish Open, pitched in from 144 yards for an eagle three on the 17th as he produced a 66, while Webster shot 67.
One further back are Ryder Cup Swede Robert Karlsson and England’s Ross Fisher, while British Masters champion Lee Westwood is in the group three behind following a 67.
Westwood wanted the course to play a lot tougher, but he still might walk away with the first prize of nearly €500,000 and so join Tiger Woods as the Tour’s only three-time winners of 2007.
