SIPTU has served strike notice on management at the Irish Glass Bottle factory in Dublin after its members voted for industrial action over severance pay for laid-off workers.

SIPTU said management at IGB rejected the terms of a Labour Court recommendation on severance pay to workers due to the imminent closure of the plant.

Spokesman Gerry Lynch said the unions at the plant explored every option in the hope of avoiding a strike, but these efforts failed due to management’s "extremely negative attitude".

The strike is due to get underway next Monday.
