The Green Party is reiterating its support for marriage equality in Ireland.

Party Leader John Gormley said the Greens are committed to bringing about recognition for same-sex marriages and that the Civil Partnership legislation is the first step in that campaign.

The controversial bill was published just over three weeks ago and provides recognition to same sex couples, but stops short of recognising civil marriage.

Speaking in Dublin last night, Minister Gormley said the Green party can not understand how some people do not support it.
