Moody at risk of extended ban

England and Lions forward Lewis Moody could face further punishment despite being banned for a month by his club Leicester.

The Tigers have suspended their World Cup-winning flanker after he admitted striking England U19 captain Jordan Crane during a Guinness A League game between the east midlanders and Leeds on Monday night.

Crane left the field nursing a badly-cut nose, and Moody was summoned by Leicester to attend an internal disciplinary hearing.

Tigers’ suspension means Moody is sidelined until October 6, although he still faces a Rugby Football Union hearing in Coventry on September 20 after being cited by Leeds officials.

Moody, 27, will miss Premiership appointments with Wasps, Bath and Leeds, plus a Powergen Cup tie against Welsh regional side Newport-Gwent Dragons.

He only appeared as a second-half substitute against Tykes’ A team, scoring one of Leicester’s eight tries as they triumphed 53-22.

The RFU disciplinary panel, chaired by Richard Moon, will inevitably take Moody’s club ban into account when considering the case, but they could also impose their own period of suspension.

Recommended punishment for striking an opponent with hand, arm, fist or elbow ranges from two weeks to a maximum 12 months.

Moody had been due to make his first Premiership appearance of the campaign on Saturday, when Tigers visit Wasps. His place in the starting line-up will now be taken by Brett Deacon.

“Obviously, we would have liked to have had Lewis available, but Brett’s had a superb pre-season and he is a more than capable replacement,” said Tigers forwards coach Richard Cockerill.

If Moody’s lay-off is extended by the RFU, then it could even place his participation in England’s autumn Test series under threat.

The world champions meet Australia at Twickenham on November 12, followed by appointments with New Zealand seven days later and Samoa on November 26.

Given the international retirements of his fellow World Cup heroes Lawrence Dallaglio and Neil Back – plus another serious knee injury suffered by Saracens star Richard Hill – then Moody is crucial to England head coach Andy Robinson’s plans.

Despite the competitive English domestic season being less than a week old, three players have already been cited for foul play.

Apart from Moody, Saracens’ Fiji international Nicky Little was reported by London Irish for a charge on Exiles fly-half Ross Laidlaw, also during an A League match, while the Premiership citing officer lodged a protest against Worcester number eight Drew Hickey for a similar offence involving Gloucester skipper Adam Balding.

Balding has undergone surgery after suffering a triple fracture of his cheekbone, and he is unlikely to play again until November.

Hickey and Little will appear before RFU disciplinary chiefs next Tuesday.
