At least 51 people have been killed during continued violence in the Nigerian city of Jos.

Fighting broke out between Muslims and Christians at prayer time last Friday. Churches, mosques and houses were burned down during the trouble.

The official death toll is 51, but some say the real figure is more likely to be over a hundred.

Witness accounts say bodies are still lying in the streets even though soldiers have been removing corpses for days.

Troops blocked journalists and distraught families from hospital morgues.

Locals say the fighting broke out after what they called a simple slight – a Christian woman tried to cross a street where Muslim men were gathered in front of a mosque for Friday prayers.

Former Nigerian military ruler, Yakubu Gowon, was engaged in talks between Muslim and Christian groups in an effort to stop the fighting today.
