The issue of new contracts for hospital doctors is set to top the agenda at the Irish Medical Organisation's AGM in Co Kerry over the coming days.

The Government has set next week as the latest deadline for negotiations on the matter between consultant groups and the Health Service Executive.

Minister for Health Mary Harney has vowed to hire 1,500 new consultants on new contracts if the negotiations are not successful.

However, asked yesterday if the talks would be disbanded next week, she said that was a matter for the independent chairman overseeing the discussions.

Ms Harney is expected to receive a hostile reception when she addresses the IMO's three-day AGM tomorrow.
