A new hotline is to be set up today to tackle the problem of illegal drugs in North Dublin.

People in Finglas and Cabra can ring the hotline to notify the Gardaí about illegal drug dealing in their area.

Minister of State Noel Ahern, who is responsible for the National Drugs Strategy, is to launch the hotline at Finglas Civic Offices today.

It will be operated from Finglas and Cabra Garda Stations and will be monitored continuously.

It is a joint initiative between the Finglas Community Safety Forum, the Cabra Community Policing Forum and Cabra Community Against Drugs.

Last year, the Gardaí relaunched its confidential Crimestoppers helpline. Around 50% of the calls received concern drugs and the information gathered has led to some large seizures.
