Four men from Northern Ireland were arrested in tonight when gardaí seized around two million smuggled cigarettes.

The arrests were made when gardaí raided a rented unit on an enterprise park at Kingscourt, Co Cavan.

Local gardaí were accompanied by members of the Emergency Response Unit from Dublin in carrying out the raid.

Sources said the cigarettes were not believed to be part of a haul hijacked just north of the border on Monday – but that they were similar to cigarettes smuggled previously by dissident republicans.

Three million cigarettes were taken when a gang seized a lorry outside Newry, Co Down yesterday.

The lorry, minus it’s load, was later found burning on the southern side of the border.
