Family 'had to vacate emergency accommodation when hotel had business meeting'

The Government is being asked to increase the rent supplement to prevent more families losing their homes.

Latest figures form the Dublin Region Homeless Executive show the number of children sleeping in hotels, hostels and other emergency accommodation in Dublin went up by more than 60 between October and November - from 680 to 741.

The number of children sleeping in hotels, hostels and other emergency accommodation in Dublin has increased from 680 in October to 741 in November.

"These figures are absolutely shocking and unacceptable," said director of services at Focus Ireland Catherine Maher.

"This is happening because people are facing economic problems. It's happening because families cannot afford to pay their rent. If the Government increased the rent supplement to these families, we could keep them in their homes."

The Government has announced plans to build 35,000 new social housing units in a bid to tackle the homelessness crisis.

Ms Maher said current arrangements were unsuitable for families, citing the example of one family housed in emergency accommodation.

"They were in a hotel and when the hotel needed to have a meeting for some business, the family were asked to leave the hotel for the day and come back later that evening," she said.

"These are children who have to get up in the morning, get dressed for school, go to school, come back and then maybe in the middle of doing their homework in the room are asked to leave and then come back. It's appalling."
