One thousand US soldiers have reportedly gathered on the border between Afghanistan and the former Soviet states of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, fuelling speculation of imminent attacks.

Yesterday, British Prime Minister Tony Blair hinted that the Taliban would become the target of US retaliation if they fail to hand over Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in last month’s US attacks.

With winter also on the way in Afghanistan, most observers believe the US assault will begin within days.
