A Dublin man who sexually molested and raped his infant daughter has been jailed for 12 years by Justice Patrick Smyth at the Central Criminal Court.

The child's mother did not believe her story and slapped her when the abuse was revealed.

The incidents happened in Dublin and County Kerry.

The court was told that the 40-year-old man first sexually assaulted his daughter when she was just four years old and that the abuse continued until she was eight.

The court heard that the defendant raped his daughter on the bathroom floor after bathing her as well as at locations in Dublin and Kerry. He offered her £5or £10 not to tell anyone, including her mother.

Judge Smyth was told that the defendant came from a dysfunctional family. He had been in trouble with the law several times although none of his other offences were of a sexual nature.

The court was told that his guilty pleas brought great relief rather than having the family face the alternative of a trial.
