Treble joy for Lee at Musselburgh

Graham Lee rescued his weekend with a 6-1 treble at Musselburgh courtesy of Some Touch, Masafi – both trained by Howard Johnson for Graham Wylie – and Snowy.

The rider had travelled down to Windsor on Saturday with millionaire owner Wylie, where they had high hopes of winning the Long Walk Hurdle with star turn Inglis Drever, only to learn the meeting had been abandoned just as they drove into the car park.

Some Touch (4-9) was sent to the front from the outset in the Musselburgh Annual Members Maiden Hurdle and though he was pestered up the straight by Rajayla, he kept on well and had four lengths to spare at the line.

Lee said: “The ground is very, very fast, and Some Touch wasn’t very happy on it. He is very nice horse, but still a bit immature and green.”

Masafi was 2-7 to get off the mark at the second attempt in the Watch Live On “thebettingsite.co.uk” Novices’ Hurdle and he duly obliged.

But he had to work rather harder than expected to hold the sustained challenge up the straight from Spring Breeze by six lengths.

Lee added: “He learned a lot from his race at Huntingdon and he is another nice horse who should go on from this.”

Snowy, trained by Alistair Charlton and carrying the colours of Ray Green, took up the challenge in the East Lothian Council Handicap Chase.

And with Lee taking over from declared jockey Tony Dobbin when his original mount Magnificent Seven was withdrawn, they had an unbeaten record to maintain.

Lee’s three previous rides on Snowy had all been at Kelso, but the seven-year-old coped with this very different course to run out a seven-length winner.

“He is a grand horse and I suppose it is just luck that we have hit it off. He is probably not as effective here as he is at Kelso, but to be fair this ground was quick enough even for him,” Lee said of the 11-4 chance.

Snowy has a trip back to Kelso in the New Year on the agenda, as Green explained: “He is an out-and-out stayer and we may try him in the four-mile Borders National, though he does not handle the soft.”

Keith Reveley’s Clouding Over supplemented a recent course and distance success with the minimum of fuss under Richard McGrath in the East Lothian Council Novices’ Chase.

The grey mare took up the running three out and though El Andaluz tried to peg her back, the former was not going to be denied and she had him four lengths adrift at the line.

Reveley has his horses in good form and he said: “She is definitely going the right way now. She has been a very buzzy filly, but she jumped well and settled and I was very pleased with her.

“She seems to like a flat right-handed track and we may go for a two-and-a-half-mile novices’ handicap at Huntingdon over Christmas now.”

He went on: “Her dam Wellwotdouthink was the best mare we have ever trained, but unfortunately we could not keep her sound.”

Saif Sareea, owned by a syndicate of 30 Timeform employees and their relatives, was successful over the course and distance three weeks ago and he returned to double up under Padge Whelan in the Famous Grouse Handicap Hurdle.

Trained by Richard Fahey, Saif Sareea (7-2) has now won twice over hurdles and twice on the Flat, and syndicate member Andrew Sheret said: “He is doing well for us and the plan now is to bring him back here for a similar race under a penalty on December 29.”

Ulster trainer James Lambe sent out his ninth winner of the season in Britain when Winter Star popped up at 20-1 in the bumper and gave Richard Harding, brother of Cumbrian-based Brian, his first success in Britain, having had 19 winners under Rules in Ireland.

Rose Davidson gained her fourth success of the season on Bohemian Spirit in the opening “Watch Live Racing On Racing UK” Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase.

The winner is one of seven horses Miss Davidson’s father Duncan has with Nicky Richards, who said: “The ground makes a big difference to this horse. He does handle the soft, but he has stamina limitations on it.

“He won quite easily, but it was a very moderate race so I hope the handicapper takes that into account. He is a fun horse and we may run him back over hurdles.”
