Commuters urged to share cars, cycle or walk to work

Dublin City Council has urged people to adopt more environmentally friendly methods of transport including car pooling, cycling and walking.

Throughout Mobility week under the theme Climate Change, running from September 16 to 22, officials organised walking and cycling tour, exhibitions and sport prizes.

In the run-up to today’s Global Car-free day which is held across four continents in a bid to make the streets vehicle free, the council moved to get students involved in the event by installing bike racks in a number of schools throughout the city.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Vincent Jackson said: “We should remember the objective of Mobility Week is to change our approach to commuting and reduce the amount of cars and emissions on our roads giving us all the benefit of a healthier lifestyle.”

On Monday last high visibility jackets were given to cyclists as they travelled to work at the junction between College Green and Foster Place.

An awareness campaign was running in schools all week promoting environmentally healthy forms of transport such as walking, cycling, car-pooling and public transport.

Students also took part in art, poster and song competitions, transport services and ’walking buses’ to school as part of an innovative measure to raise awareness.
