The UN Security Council voted unanimously to establish a new committee to continue monitoring the freezing of assets linked to Saddam Hussein, his followers and companies that Saddam’s regime controlled.

The Security Council committee that monitored sanctions against Iraq ceased to exist last week when the UN oil-for-food humanitarian programme ended and its remaining functions were transferred to the US-led coalition.

Russia, France, and Germany said the new committee should also have been authorised to monitor the arms embargo against Iraq.
