Lehmann decision imminent

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann expects to make a decision on his future at the club within the next week.

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann expects to make a decision on his future at the club within the next week.

The 37-year-old German veteran’s existing contract expires at the end of the season and the Gunners, in line with club policy on senior players, are offering a 12-month extension.

Lehmann is thought to have wanted the security of a two-year deal but claims he is close to making a decision.

He told Arsenal TV Online: “We will see. I think there will be a decision within the next few days or next week. I would like to play here, I have always said I would like to stay but it is a situation where no decision has been made yet. It is difficult to talk about it (now).”

Arsenal, fourth in the Barclays Premiership, face fifth-placed Bolton at home tomorrow in a crucial clash for both Champions League-chasing clubs.

The Gunners go into the game after picking up just one point in their last four games and Lehmann is hoping the team can enjoy a change of fortune.

“It is one of the more important ones,” he said of the game. “Hopefully we will be more lucky than recently, scoring goals and not conceding, and it will turn out a good result.”

Manager Arsene Wenger believes victory would make his side “80%” certain of a top-four place but he is not setting any specific points targets.

The Frenchman added: “We want to win every game until the end of the season. We feel we need to respond to the recent games and we want to finish the season well.”
