Campbell: 'I won't jump ship'

New signing Kevin Campbell has vowed to remain at West Bromwich Albion for next season even if they lose their battle to remain in the Barclays Premiership.

New signing Kevin Campbell has vowed to remain at West Bromwich Albion for next season even if they lose their battle to remain in the Barclays Premiership.

Campbell, 34, has ended a six-year association with Everton and joined the Baggies on an 18-month contract.

But the former Arsenal striker has insisted that he has no get-out clause if Albion make an instant return to the Coca-Cola Championship after just one year.

Campbell said: “I never considered asking for an escape clause. I wanted to make the commitment to West Brom. I don’t see how that would change if the team is relegated.

“I know the position the team is in and I sincerely believe that the team can get out of it and stay in the Premiership.

“But, if it does not happen, there is an important part to do in trying to get the team back to the Premiership. That is why the 18-month contract is there.

“I have never had it easy in my career and I would not want to take the easy route to be honest. Sometimes contracts are there to be honoured and it is not just a matter of ‘I want to play at the highest level and that’s it’.

“It is about the man and I know I am an honest man and an honest player and I want to do well for whichever club I go to. I am at West Brom now and want to do the best for them – whether in the Premier League or the Championship.”

Campbell has been relegated once before in his career with Nottingham Forest in 1997 but believes Albion can make sufficient strides forward in the next four months to avoid the drop.

He said: “There were a lot of major problems at the time at Forest and I do not think there are a lot of major problems here.

“I think there is a good squad here and with a few additions I think the squad could really jump up the table. I really believe that. I would not have joined if I did not think that was the case. I think the players in the team can do better and will do better.

“They have started to turn their form around and, with a little bit of luck, can start to move up the table now.”
