The former President and Government Minister, Dr Patrick Hillery, died today following a short illness.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said it was with deep regret that he announced the death of Dr Hillery on behalf of the Government.
It is understood the 84-year-old passed away in Dublin following a short illness.
Mr Ahern expressed his deepest sympathy to his widow Maeve and their son, Dr John Hillery.
The out-going Taoiseach said the offer of a state funeral has been accepted by the Hillery family, the details of which will be announced later.
Born in 1923, the Co Clare native qualified as a medical doctor before entering politics.
In 1951 he was persuaded to stand for Fianna Fáil and became a TD for his home county for more than 20 years.
Dr Hillery received his first Government appointment as Minister for Education in 1959, and served in a number of ministerial posts including, industry and commerce, labour and external affairs.
He served as Ireland’s first European Commissioner from 1973 to 1976, when he was inaugurated as President of Ireland.
