Broadand services provider Digiweb has been accepted as a member of the international wireless industry body, the WiMax Forum, which was established to promote and certify compatibility and interoperability of broadband wireless products and platforms.

Digiweb is the first Irish wireless broadband provider to be accepted by the group, and joins leading wireless service providers and equipment manufacturers internationally, including Intel, Deutsche Telecom, France Telecom, Airspan, Aperto, Motorola, Alvarion and Siemens.

"We're building a WiMax-ready network across Ireland, which by early 2005 will service over 50% of the country. WiMax will enable us reach deeper into rural and under-served areas, while providing self-install options in towns and cities," said Hugh Logue, wireless deployment manager.

With services already available in Dublin, Meath and Louth, Digiweb's new services in Cork were turned live by Minister Dermot Ahern, Minister for Communications Marine and Natural Resources on Monday of this week.

Servicing the City and surrounding areas today, Digiweb plan to service 85% of Cork county by mid-November.

Digiweb also plans to continue its rapid deployment of services throughout the country, and are already progressing the network into the Midlands and Border Regions, with most locations planned to be live and offering services by December.
