Cody drops son and skipper

Kilkenny manager Brian Cody has wielded the axe for Saturday's All-Ireland SHC quarter-final against Galway, dropping his own son Donnacha and team captain Jackie Tyrell (Semple Stadium, throw-in 6pm).

Cody has made four changes and two positional switches to the side that comfortably beat Wexford in the Leinster final earlier this month.

Donnacha Cody's place at right corner-back goes to Michael Kavanagh, who has recovered from a foot injury, while James Ryall will step in for Tyrell at right half-back.

Both Cody and Tyrell were tellingly demoted to the B team for a training match on Tuesday night.

Aidan Fogarty has fought off an ankle injury to take over from Michael Rice at left half-forward, with Eoin McCormack slotting in at right corner-forward as an indirect replacement for midfielder Richie Mullally.

Derek Lyng has a new partner at midfield, and surprisingly it is the 22-year-old Eoin Larkin, who has never played in the position for his club James Stephens. James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick partnered Lyng at centrefield at trainning recently, so a switch there looks likely.

Martin Comerford also moves across to full-forward, the position held by Larkin against Wexford.

KILKENNY (SHC v Galway) - J McGarry; M Kavanagh, JJ Delaney, N Hickey; J Ryall, J Tennyson, T Walsh; D Lyng, E Larkin; E Brennan, J Fitzpatrick, A Fogarty; E McCormack, M Comerford, H Shefflin.
