An international conference takes place in Dublin today aimed at improving patient safety here.

The conference is organised by the Eastern Regional Health Authority and Reed Smith Healthcare Consulting.

Noel Daly, the company's managing director, says that medical error is a serious problem elsewhere: "At the moment in the US, 100,000 people are dying every year as a result of medical error - to put it in context, hospital induced infections are now the eighth leading killer in the US."

Mr Daly said that 286 doctors were reported to the Medical Council under the Fitness to Practice regime last year.

He said he hopes today’s event will ultimately put the issue on the top of the agenda here in Ireland, and that we can learn from what has happened in other countries.
