Monty’s Pass, winner of last year’s Martell Cognac Grand National, will have his final start at Naas on Sunday before attempting back-to-back victories in the Aintree showpiece
The 11-year-old ran out a 12-length winner of the marathon event last season, but has been unsuccessful in three jumps starts since.
Although a winner of a charity race on the Flat in July, the gelding has been beaten twice over timber and could only finish seventh in the Guinness Kerry National.
“Monty’s Pass will run on Sunday. He is in good form and this is the weather for him, because he improves with the sunshine,” trainer Jimmy Mangan told the Racing Post.
“I don’t think there is all that much rain forecast so the going should be a massive improvement on Gowran Park last time when it was sticky, which he cannot handle.
“The National is drawing close so this will be his last run before Aintree. There is not really a suitable chase for him, but he knows all he needs to about jumping.”
