Peru pair appear in court

Two women arrested in Peru on suspicion of drug-trafficking have appeared before the country's district attorney.

Authorities are now determining whether they will face criminal charges.

Michaella McCollum from Dungannon and Melissa Reid from Glasgow, were arrested at Lima's airport on suspicion of trying to smuggle cocaine out of the country.

Evening Herald Claire Murphy said a presiding Judge is evaluating whether or not there is sufficient evidence for a case against the women.

"It is expected that there will be sufficient evidence presented to him from the prosecution lawyer and his team," she said.

"Then they will be transferred officially from police custody to judicial custody

"They will then be held… in a cell underneath the court room for perhaps a couple of days before being transferred to Santa Monica prison."
