Taxi drivers are returning to work this morning after a second 24-hour strike to protest at a new fare structure being imposed by the regulator.

The majority of taxi drivers in Dublin took part in the strike, but there was apparently less disruption elsewhere in the State.

The stoppage was arranged to protest at a new fare structure that will see drivers lose out on luggage fees and on an extra charge for picking up passengers at Dublin Airport.

The taxi unions are demanding talks with the regulator Ger Deering to re-negotiate the new fares.

However, Mr Deering has pointed out that the new structure is being put in place following a lengthy public consultation process in which the unions were invited to take part.

He also says many taxi drivers oppose the strikes being arranged by their unions and have only taken part due to fears of intimidation.
