Two of the State's largest hospitals are facing a funding crisis.

A report in today's Irish Times claims there has been a 12% cut in funding for Dublin's Mater hospital which could result in up to 11,000 fewer treatments there.

Management is also reported to be looking at a recruitment freeze.

Meanwhile, the Dail has heard Beaumont hospital is considering cutbacks to its cancer treatment and kidney dialysis services in order to reign in spending.

Consultants at the hospital have warned that if the proposed budget cuts go ahead lives will be endangered.

It is feared the cuts are similar to those in the 1980's.
