Around 360 people are expected to lose their jobs in Wexford town over the coming weeks due to the imminent closure of the Wexford Electronix plant.

A receiver appointed last December told workers at the factory yesterday that all efforts to find a buyer have failed.

The company has been experiencing financial difficulties for some time and laid off 40 people last year after a downturn in orders for heavy machinery.

There are also fears today that 100 workers at the IP plant in nearby Gorey could also be laid off.

Local Labour TD Brendan Howlin said the news has "driven a stake through the heart of Wexford".
