The accident, 50 miles west of Stockholm, is believed to have happened when the driver fell asleep. The fire is thought to have been caused by the hot engine igniting leaking petrol.

Three survivors were taken to hospital with serious brain and burn injuries. The players, all aged between 18 and 22, were on their way home to the city of Soedertaelje, central Sweden, after a tournament in the southwestern city of Goteborg on Saturday.

The accident occurred near Straengnaes. No identities have been released.
