The baby daughter of British Chancellor of the Exchequer Mr Gordon Brown and wife Sarah was gravely ill in hospital today after a brain haemorrhage.

Jennifer, who was born seven weeks premature 10 days ago, was baptised yesterday after her condition deteriorated, a spokesman for the couple said.

The couple spent a third night waiting at their daughter's bedside in the neo-natal unit at the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary - one of the country's top facilities.

A brief statement issued on behalf of Mr and Mrs Brown yesterday afternoon said: "Sadly, Jennifer's condition following her brain haemorrhage has deteriorated over the last 24 hours. Gordon and Sarah are with her and are grateful for the support and good wishes they are receiving at a difficult time".
