Harte appointed Tyrone manager

Mickey Harte has been appointed manager of the Tyrone senior football team.

Harte, who is currently in charge of the county's under-21 team, will take over from Art McRory and Eugene McKenna, who had managed the senior side together.

McRory resigned from the position last month for health reasons and McKenna failed to secure appointment as a sole candidate.

Ballinderry manager Brian McIver and former Derry player Peter Doherty were also in the running for the job.

Harte is now expected to appoint Fr Gerard McAleer as his assistant.

The two men have jointly managed the Tyrone minor and under-21 teams in the past 10 years, winning six Ulster and three All-Ireland titles.

Harte has worked with virtually every member of the current senior squad at underage level and is believed to be popular among the players.

He is expected to take over the reins immediately to prepare the team for the defence of their National League title.
