The Giro d’Italia is over for one Italian cyclist - after this dangerous high speed crash while descending the Barbagelata, a second category climb, yesterday.

Domenico Pozzovivo, the leader of French team Ag2r-La Mondiale, was left bleeding on the ground after the downhill crash.

The cyclist lay motionless and was placed in a neck brace and wrapped in a survival blanket before being removed from the scene by ambulance.

The team’s medical manager Dr Eric Bouvat said the cyclist is conscious, but has deep facial wounds and no recollection of the crash.

“Domenico suffers from a cranial-facial trauma but the scanner reveals no intra-cranial lesion,” Bouvat said.

“He has deep wounds above his right eye and received stitches. He is conscious and lucid but has no memory of the crash.”

The team also confirmed Pozzovivo would play no further part in the race.
