Premier Division duo join Kildare

Sean Francis has left Longford Town for First Division promotion contenders Kildare County, who also tied up a move for Dublin City goalkeeper Brendan Kennedy.

The Birmingham-born striker handed in a transfer request to the Flancare Park club at the end of last month after being left out of manager Alan Matthews’ side for their UEFA Cup tie against FC Vaduz.

A Newbridge resident, Francis sealed his move to Station Road with a deal running to the end of the 2005 season.

Francis, 32, was previously at Shamrock Rovers, whose former goalkeeper Barry Ryan paved the way for Kennedy’s move to County.

Kennedy, 30, had been at Dublin City since 2001 and the signing of Ryan three weeks after he had completed a nine-month ban for doping offences saw him move down the pecking order with the Vikings.

Both Kennedy and Francis could make their debuts in Kildare’s first division promotion battle at Finn Harps tomorrow night.
