Three years after signing for the Blues, Courtois made his debut in Chelsea’s first game of the season, and Cech was named among the substitutes.

Summer signings Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa also started while there was also a place in the team for World Cup winner Andre Schurrle.

Burnley, making their first Premier League appearance in five years, handed debuts to Matt Taylor and Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Burnley: Heaton, Trippier, Duff, Shackell, Mee, Taylor, Marney, Jones, Arfield, Ings, Jutkiewicz. Subs: Wallace, Kightly, Sordell, Gilks, Long, Barnes, Dummigan.

Chelsea: Courtois, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta, Fabregas, Matic, Schurrle, Oscar, Hazard, Costa. Subs: Cech, Luis, Zouma, Torres, Drogba, Mikel, Willian.

Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland)
