A murder probe has been launched after the body of a man with stab wounds was discovered in a burnt-out flat.

Michael O Shea, 31, was found by firefighters called to a blaze in North Main Street, Youghal, Co Cork, at approximately 2.30am this morning.

Attempts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial inquiries and a preliminary post-mortem examination revealed he had been the victim of a knife attack.

The crime scene has been preserved and is still being technically examined.

Meanwhile Mr O Shea’s body has been taken to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination is being carried out by assistant state pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

Councillor Barbara Murray said the victim came from a well-known and nice family who were long established in the area.

“People are in shock,” she said.

“This is the kind of thing that doesn’t happen in Youghal.

“It’s a tourist town, a seaside town, a heritage town, and at this time of year it’s very quiet.”

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses who may have information to come forward.

In particular they want to know Mr O Shea’s movements before 10pm last night and any suspicious or unusual activity around his home overnight.

“Any person who may be in possession of any information regarding the death are asked to contact the Gardaí,” a spokesman added.
