Multi-millionaire businessman Denis O’Brien has walked out of the Oireachtas inquiry into the mini-CTC signalling system after accusing Sean Doherty of being unfit to chair the inquiry.

Mr O’Brien was being questioned about a joint venture between his former company, ESAT, and CIE when angry words were exchanged.

When asked to apologise, Mr O’Brien told Mr Doherty he is unfit to chair the inquiry because of his involvement in the phone-tapping controversy and other activities.

In a further statement this afternoon, Mr O’Brien said he stands over his comments and will not be withdrawing them.
