Ferrie wades in to Wentworth date with win

Kenneth Ferrie’s victory in the European Open has edged joint runner-up Colin Montgomerie out of a place in the HSBC World Match Play championship at Wentworth in September.

Montgomerie would have had a shot at the prize – golf’s biggest cheque – if he had finished second on his own. But missing a five-foot birdie putt on the final green at the K Club near Dublin left him alongside Graeme Storm.

Two places in the Match Play were on offer from a table of work ranking points from four European tour events – the Dubai Desert Classic, Johnnie Walker Classic, BMW Championship and European Open.

Argentina’s Angel Cabrera finished top, while Ferrie finished with 49.6 points - 46 of them from his win – and Montgomerie with 48.75.

Montgomerie still has a chance to make the tournament – 10 places are still up for grabs from this season’s four majors and the top two non-exempt players on the European Order of Merit at the end of August also qualify.
