New British Foreign Secretary William Hague is going to the US on Friday for talks certain to focus on the war in Afghanistan.
News of the visit came as US President Barack Obama and Afghan president Hamid Karzai held a joint press conference at the White House after talks on the country’s future.
Mr Karzai said the US and Afghanistan were much more strongly linked now than at any time in the past decade.
He also said tensions with President Obama were not a negative development, but reflect a deep and strong relationship between Washington and Kabul.
Both leaders acknowledged difficulties and frank talks, but Mr Karzai said: “We are much more strongly related to each other today than we ever were before.”
